Big Bend Overland Tours
Big Bend National Park

Offering customized tours for destinations in and around the Big Bend National Park region. Perhaps you'd like to have a close look at the Mariscal Mine ruins, the Rio Grande, historic settlements and remarkable scenic vistas?

Tours begin and end at Big Bend Resort and Adventures in Terlingua OR at Chisos Mountain Lodge in Big Bend National Park's Chisos Basin. The tours are conducted utilizing a comfortable air-conditioned Ford Excursion 4-wheel drive vehicle. Dress for the season; tours are offered all year. All guests need to bring is sunscreen, binoculars, cameras and plenty of water. Wear closed toed shoes. Your local tour guide carries a satellite phone and extra water. The following are available itineraries however customizing tours and timing is possible as well. Advanced reservations are required.

The Santa Elena Loop Tour This 5-hr. tour begins at the Park's west entrance to Old Maverick Road. See the century-old settlements (Luna Jacal & Terlingua Abajo) and view the immensely beautiful Santa Elena Canyon from the base of its 1,500-ft.-high cliffs. Lunch is served at the Historic Castalon Store and the tour continues with stops at Sotol Vista and Sam Neil Ranch while showcasing the area's flora, fauna, geology and history.

Old Ore Road Tour (8 hrs.) Explore the geology, history and unique eco systems of the Park's picturesque Chihuahuan Desert. Infrequently-travelled today, the Old Ore Road was once used to haul ore from the Mexican mines to the railroad in Marathon, TX. En route guests hike the 1/2-mile Ernst Tinaja Trail through a majestically colored, layered-limestone canyon. Also see many signs of the area's early ranching at Willow Springs and McKinney Springs. Witness the changes in flora with the presence of water. The odyssey trip ends at Dagger Flats where Giant Daggers Yucca dominate the scenery. Box lunch included.

Indian Head Springs and Moon Valley Tour (5-6 hrs.) Walk back in time and envision this Native American camp site. Archeology carbon samples have dated this area in use over 7,000 years ago. View pictographs and the panoramic scenery. Explore the indigenous rock to engage the hidden wonders of the Chihuahuan Desert. Continue the trip to Moon Valley, the location selected by NASA in April 1964 to train Neil Armstrong and other astronauts to identify various rocks and minerals and practice taking a rock sample—he was going to need to know this during his moon landing mission!

Old River Road including Glenn Springs (10-12 hrs.) 
A unique back road, one-of-a-kind tour travels through one of the most remote, beautiful and historic areas in the Park. The Old River Road runs along the southern end of the Park, between Rio Grande Village and historic Castolon. Guests experience the Rio Grande River, diverse plant life, unusual rock formations, and fantastic desert views. You will see the legendary Mariscal Mine ruins where mercury was produced and the Glenn Springs historic site, where a bandit raid occurred in 1916. Box lunch included.
